Legislation which would arm Illinois Department of Children and Family Services workers with pepper spray is being considered in Springfield. The proposal was introduced by lawmakers in response to two DCFS investigators being killed on the job in the past few years. State Representative Carol Ammons is worried the devices will be misused.
State Representative Tony McCombie said even without the legislation, caseworkers could carry the devices, but without training from police.
McCombie noted that anyone wrongfully using pepper spray would be charged with battery.
