As Illinois police departments lobby city councils on the importance of cameras to combat crime, some are raising concerns about the right to privacy. The American Civil Liberties Unions has released a report on Flock Safety and how they are building a form of mass surveillance never seen before in American life. Ed Yohnka with the ACLU of Illinois says the rapid expansion of the camera network raises several questions, including access to the data.
Yohnka says city leaders and police need to adopt privacy policies before purchasing the systems. Bloomington recently approved purchasing the cameras, as did Springfield. City leaders in Peoria say the system purges the data every month.
