The Vandalia City Council approved a tax levy abatement ordinance at its final meeting of the year on Monday evening. Prior to voting on the ordinance, Mayor Rick Gottman pointed out that the city had not increased the tax levy for several years and thanked the council and the city employees for their hard work that allowed the city to not have to raise the tax levy. Gottman reminded that they have been able to take the money they have needed for police pension out of gaming revenue and the general fund. And with being able to make it several years in a row without raising the tax levy, Gottman says the city will try to “continue that pace.” Following Gottman’s words, the council members in attendance voted unanimously in approval of the ordinance.
In other business, the council approved a resolution for the adoption of the Fayette County Multi-Jurisdictional All Hazards Mitigation Plan which fulfills FEMA requirements of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 that calls for a mitigation plan be in place should the city ever need to be the recipient of future mitigation funding if it ever experiences any natural or man-made hazards which the resolution states includes “severe thunderstorms, severe winter storms, floods, tornadoes and drought among others.”
The council also approved the purchase of a Pathogen Defense System for the Sewer Vac Truck and approved a bid from Westendorf Construction for the replacement of the roof at the sewer plant filter building.
