(Springfield, IL) — Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is raising questions about the practice of suing prison inmates to recover the cost of their imprisonment. Madigan’s office files such suits on the recommendation of the Department of Corrections under a 1982 law. Out of 31 such suits filed since 2010, the state has recovered half-a-million-dollars, mostly from two inmates. Madigan says the suits raise moral questions about whether they hamper former inmates who are trying to build successful lives.
