(St. Louis, MO) — Nick Markakis’ grand slam highlighted a six-run fifth inning as the Braves hammered the Cardinals 11-4 in St. Louis. Ronald Acuna Junior also homered for Atlanta, which carried an 11-0 lead into the ninth. Max Fried struck out 11 and held the Cards scoreless in just under seven frames to get the win. The Braves lead the NL East at 47-and-34. Jose Martinez homered, while Harrison Bader and Yairo Munoz each laced an RBI-double in the losing effort for St. Louis. Luke Weaver surrendered eight runs to take the loss. The Cardinals have dropped three in-a-row to fall to 42-and-39.
(Chicago, IL) — The Cubs offense racked up 20 hits as they outlasted the Twins 14-9 on a hot day in Chicago. With the game tied at nine in the seventh, Jason Heyward, who had four hits, singled in the go-ahead run and Javier Baez laced a two-run double. Chicago tallied five runs in the fifth and seventh innings to pull away. Twins players Eddie Rosario, Bobby Wilson and Max Kepler left early due to heat illness. Joe Mauer drove in three Minnesota runs and has eight RBIs in the series. Trevor Hildenberger gave up five runs on four walks and four hits in the seventh to take the loss.
