(St. Louis, MO) — Jose Martinez broke the game open with a three-run homer in the third inning as the Cardinals smoked the Diamondbacks 5-3 in St. Louis. Martinez’s homer broke a two-all tie and put the Cards up for good. He also had a one-run single in the first and Matt Carpenter plated a run on a sac-fly. Michael Wacha picked up the win with five innings of work as the Cards tied the three-game set at a win each. Zach Greinke gave up nine hits and five runs over five frames to take the loss for Arizona. Micah Owings plated two runs in defeat.
(Milwaukee, WI) — The Cubs reeled off four runs in the ninth inning as they rallied past the Brewers 5-2 in Milwaukee. Ben Zobrist singled in the tying run before Ian Happ drilled a two-run single to put the Cubs up for good. Kris Bryant homered in the sixth, and Yu Darvish struck out nine over six innings of two-hit, one-run ball. Pedro Strop came away with the win. Zach Davies fired six innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts in a no-decision for the Brewers. Jacob Barnes blew the save and took the loss for Milwaukee. Eric Thames homered in defeat.
