(Chicago, IL) — The latest plan from Governor Bruce Rauner’s administration to deal with Legionnaires’ disease at the Quincy veterans home is to rebuild. Eventually. Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Director Erica Jeffries yesterday told a House and Senate panel that she hopes to replace the dorms where dozens of veterans have caught Legionnaires’ disease. But she said it may take five years to do so. Thirteen veterans have died and dozens of others have gotten sick from Legionnaires’ at the home since 2015, and four new cases were reported last month alone. Lawmakers are worried how many more people will get sick before the new dorms can be built.
