Water and sewer rates will stay the same for water customers in Vandalia for the time being. The Vandalia City Council heard their yearly audit on Monday night which usually includes a recommendation for whether rates should stay the same or increase based on IMRF pension adjustments and the GASB 68 accounting standards for pensions. This year’s audit called for increases of 7.82% for water rates and 7.54% for sewer rates. The city usually receives their audit their first meeting of September and then chooses whether or not to put water and sewer increases into effect in October. However, with this year’s audit coming much later than normal, the city is unable to make any increases due to the 1996 ordinance that sets the formula to determine water and sewage rate increases each year. So, water and sewer rates will stay as they are at least until this fall, when the city is expected to once again receive their audit in September and would then have until the October timeline to make a change to rates.
