There will be post-season changes in all team bracketed high school sports starting with the upcoming school year. At their meeting Monday, the IHSA said that beginning in 2015-16, team bracketing sports teams—which includes baseball, softball, basketball, soccer and volleyball—in Class 1A and 2A will now be assigned to two Sub-Sectionals, as opposed to four Regionals, that will feel into a sectional site. Each Sub-Sectional will be seeded and the top two seeds sent to different regional sites. And, the competing regional site of the remaining teams in each sub-sectional will be determined by geography. This is not the first time the IHSA has went to the sub-sectional system. In the years just before moving from two classes to four classes, the system was tried for a few years. And, it did lead to more lengthy travel—such as Lawrenceville playing at Vandalia for a Regional championship in 2006. Meanwhile, the IHSA also stated that football playoffs for Class 1A thru 6A will be seeded in two geographic brackets one thru 16, eliminating the previous mileage component within the policy. On the surface, that could potentially eliminate the problem of match ups with conference schools that has been seen in higher numbers over the past several years.
