Two indviduals were killed in an accident on Interstate 57 in Effingham County on Saturday night, as State Police say a driver was going the wrong way. The accident occurred at 10:28 Saturday night on Interstate 57 in Effingham County at mile marker 159.5. Illinois State Police reports say a vehicle being driven by 83 year old Shirley M. Klitzing of Brownstown was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic on Interstate 57 when it crashed in a semi and trailer being driven by 68 year old Richard P. Messerve of Mayer, Arizona. State Police reports say the Klitzing vehicle was thrown around Messerve’s semi and trailer, damaging the front end of the car. Messerve’s semi overturned into the guardrail due to the crash. Both drivers required extrication to be removed from their vehicles. State Police say Messerve was pronounced dead at the scene. State Police say that Klitzing was flown to Carle Hospital where she was pronounced dead due to injuries suffered in the crash.
