(Champaign, IL) — Opponents of the University of Illinois‘ old mascot say they were surprised to find that images of Chief Illiniwek are still showing up on school merchandise. The “News-Gazette” reports that even after university trustees’ voted in 2007 to stop using the Chief’s name, logo or other native American images, the school still allowed an Atlanta company to use the images on Chief Illiniwek items sold online. Assistant Athletic Director Marty Kaufmann defended the limited use of the images, saying it allows people to “remember that history and memory.”
