It may seem a bit strange with the bright sun and no rain, but the Kaskaskia River is back on the rise. The latest numbers from the National Weather Service shows the Kaskaskia River in Vandalia was at 23.1 feet this morning at 9:30 am. That is better than 5 feet over the river’s flood stage and is already again leading to flooding in the City of Vandalia–with water back up at 4th and St. Clair Streets today. The river is now expected to crest at 27 feet Saturday morning and then fall below flood stage on Monday morning. It is possible the area around the river—just to the south of the River Bridge–could see more flooding, as more water could come over the levee, as it did earlier this week.
