(Chicago, IL) — After months without one, Illinois lawmakers are in line for a paycheck, thanks to a Cook County judge. Judge Rodolfo Garcia ruled that State Comptroller Susana Mendoza can no longer refuse to pay legislators because there’s no state budget. Nor can she continue her Republican predecessor Leslie Munger’s practice of putting those pay vouchers somewhere in the middle of the 13-billion-dollar stack of unpaid state bills. The judge ruled lawmakers must be paid before state vendors. Mendoza says she’ll follow the ruling and issue the checks, though she’ll appeal at the same time. Lawmakers haven’t been paid for any hours worked after July of last year.
