M. Leona McConaughay, 98, of Brownstown died at 6:40 a.m., Sunday, September 20, 2015 at Fayette County Hospital Long Term Care Center in Vandalia.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at the Brownstown United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Griffith Cemetery, Brownstown. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at Gieseking-Claggett Funeral Home, Brownstown. Memorials may be made to the Brownstown United Methodist Church or the donors’ choice.
Leona was born on Thursday, September 6, 1917 in Tecumseh, Oklahoma to J. Wesley and Gertrude (McPherson) Johnson. She married Charles Edward McConaughay on Tuesday, August 31, 1937and he preceded her in death on September 19, 1986. She was a retired school teacher and taught in the Brownstown School District. She was a member of the Brownstown United Methodist Church, Sefton Home Extension, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, and Fayette County Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by: her daughter-in-law, Bette Stolte; grandchildren, Kathy Schniepp, Charl Bechel, Charles M. McConaughay, and Ed McConaughay, 13 great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Charles Wesley McConaughay, brothers, J.D. Johnson, Earl Johnson and sister, Betty Johnson Sheafor.
