2016 was the 5th warmest year on record in Illinois. Last year was one for the record books with the average temperature about 2.5 degrees above normal. State Climatologist Jim Angel says 2016 started off with a warm winter thanks to a strong El Nino effect.
Angel says precipitation for 2016 came in at nearly 40 inches, which is slightly below normal.
