(Decatur, IL) — Even before the FAA approves rules for the commercial use of drones, some Illinois farmers are already deploying them to survey their fields. Camera-bearing drone demonstrations are taking place this week at the Farm Progress Show, the first time they’ve been showcased as an alternative to walking the rows to assess crop progress or damage. Farmers already using drones are technically classified as hobbyists, while insurance companies are gearing up for the day, possibly next summer, when they can use drones commercially to investigate claims.
