(St. Louis, MO) — Freddie Freeman and Adonis Garcia each belted three-run homers to help power the Braves past the Cardinals, 13-5, at Busch Stadium. Ender Inciarte and Matt Kemp each added two-run shots in the ninth inning to ensure the win. Roberto Hernandez picked up the win in his season debut, striking out four over five innings of three-run ball. Carlos Martinez took the loss for St. Louis, allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits in five innings. Kolten Wong homered in defeat.
(Oakland, CA) — Jake Arrieta threw eight scoreless innings of three-hit ball to pace the Cubs past the Athletics, 4-0, at the Oakland Coliseum. Ben Zobrist collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs for Chicago, which has won nine of its past 10 games. Addison Russell and Jorge Soler also each plated a run for the Cubs. Oakland’s Sonny Gray took the loss, allowing a pair of runs before being pulled after five innings because of arm soreness. The A’s were only able to record four hits on the day. Oakland has lost seven of its past eight games.
