(Springfield, IL) — The state health department says they’ve confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus this year. An adolescent girl in St. Clair County near St. Louis became ill with the virus this month, but is expected to recover. Even though this year has seen a larger-than-normal number of virus-carrying mosquitoes, the appearance of the first human case is a little later than normal. Last year, there were 44 people infected with West Nile virus and four of those people died. West Nile Virus was just discovered in Fayette County less than ten days ago from mosquito samples there were collected in rural Ramsey and in the Shobonier/St. Peter areas—with the samples collected on August 11th and tested on August 12th.
