Interstate 70 has been closed again today—but is now expected to open back up this afternoon. Fayette County Sheriff Chris Smith says he has understood that Interstate 70, between St. Elmo and Brownstown, will re-open around 3:30 pm today. There have been reports of a “shoulder failure” and that the Illinois Department of Transportation has been working on repairs. The closure came without any early warning or notice to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department or any other office in the county—so no word was able to get out ahead of time or even during the issue. I-70 was closed in the area yesterday due to an accident and no notice of the re-routing of vehicles was given to the Sheriff’s Department at that time, either.
