(Chicago, IL) — Former west side state Chicago legislator Derrick Smith has lost the appeal of his federal bribery conviction. Smith could be released next week after serving the five-month prison sentence he was given for taking a seven-thousand-dollar bribe from a campaign worker who was secretly working for the FBI. Smith argued unsuccessfully that the undercover recordings played in court should not have been admitted since the informant was never called to the stand. On those recordings, the informant is heard counting out cash, which Smith referred to as “cheddar.”
