A legal advocacy group is preparing to sue an Illinois school district over gender support policies, arguing they violate parental rights and raise concerns about student privacy on overnight school trips. Liberty Justice Center sent a demand letter to Community High School District 128, which serves students in Lake County. The district’s attorneys responded Oct. 21, rejecting the allegations and maintaining that its policies comply with federal and state law. Kathryn Cosgrove, an attorney with Liberty Justice Center, says the group is moving toward litigation after the district declined to change its policies.
The dispute includes overnight room assignments, with the district saying it considers student and family preferences and can accommodate requests for alternative arrangements. Cosgrove says parents should be informed of the biological sex of students assigned to share rooms with their daughters.
Cosgrove says the group is also challenging guidelines addressing gender-related curriculum and educators’ use of students’ preferred pronouns.
