A retail business advocate is hoping a proposed tax incentive program for independent grocery stores and pharmacies will expand to include other retailers.
House Bill 5828 creates an income tax credit for eligible pharmacy or grocery store projects in Illinois.
State Rep. Will Guzzardi said small, independent businesses need state support to grow and expand into communities that lack grocery stores and pharmacies.
Illinois Retail Merchants Association President and CEO Rob Karr said the proposal fits nicely with a state grant program for grocery stores.
The bill requires businesses to be independently owned, with plans to make a qualifying capital investment of at least $500,000.
Grocers would also be required to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Women, Infants, and Children benefits.
