The federal government has released proposed regulations to implement the education freedom tax credit, months after Gov. J.B. Pritzker said he wanted to see rules for the program.
23 states had already opted in by January of this year, when the governor questioned whether the program could be useful or a way to move money from public schools to private schools.
Chicago homeschool advocate Latasha Fields said Illinois should support the tax credit instead of raising taxes to fund education.
Illinois state Senator Neil Anderson said Pritzker should opt in.
Under the proposed rules, taxpayers may claim an annual credit of up to $1,700 for qualifying contributions to scholarship-granting organizations, or up to $3,400 for married couples filing jointly.
