The debate over the Flock Camera Systems continues throughout the state and country, as many believe they are an invasion of privacy or maybe mishandled in some instances. But, Vandalia Mayor Doug Knebel says he believes they are a valuable tool for area law enforcement, and he also says he has full faith in area law enforcement to use the information properly.
Speaking on our podcast “Talking About Vandalia,” Mayor Knebel says he believes they can be a valuable tool and could potentially stop a crime or save someone’s life.
There have been reports of potential misuse of the Flock Camera systems in some areas. But, Mayor Knebel says you deal with those instances on a case-by-case basis and not throw out the whole thing.
One such instance of potential misuse was reported last week. The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the possible misuse of the Flock camera system by a deputy. Sheriff John Booker says a Washington Post reporter provided the sheriff’s office with information concerning the use of the Flock camera system. An internal investigation has been launched to determine the facts and whether any sheriff’s office policies, procedures, or other applicable rules were violated. The sheriff’s office’s has suspended use of Flock camera system.
