The Vandalia School District has received the first of its “report cards” from Fiscal Year 2025 with the Special Education Program receiving a near perfect overall score. During Thursday night’s Vandalia School Board meeting, Vandalia Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Garrison preempted an update presentation by District Special Education Program Coordinator Keri Buscher by informing the board that the district received 94.44% with a score of 34 out of 36 points. Buscher points credit to the district being willing to enact ideas brought forth by Buscher and the special education staff.
The lone area the district did not receive a high score of 3 out of 3 was of the Least Restrictive Environment Indicator. With that it gauges the level or number of special education students being integrated into the general education classrooms as opposed to the special learning environments. But Buscher says that pushing the students to be in general education classes is not always what is best for the individual student’s development and that proper development is what matters most to the district.
During her presentation to the school board, Buscher introduced a timeline that began in 2024 and noted progress they have made in reaching their goals in a making improvements and enhancements to the special education program. And we will hear more from Buscher about that on Monday.
