Illinois may miss out on $1 billion for education if they do not opt in to federal tax credit scholarship program

By refusing to join a federal tax credit scholarship program, Illinois may forego more than $1 billion in education funding.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker has not yet announced whether Illinois will opt in or opt out of the program that is set to take effect on January 1st.

American Federation for Children Senior Fellow Patrick Graff spoke with Greg Bishop on The States and said the scholarships would take no money from the public school system.

Scholarship funds could be used by public, private and some homeschool families.

So far, 31 states opted in, four states opted out, and governors in Arizona and Wisconsin vetoed their states’ efforts to opt in.
