On the heels of the City of Vandalia receiving a $2.3 million Regional Site Readiness Grant, the city is pushing forward with applying for more grant money that would make improvements to the city’s infrastructure. Already applied for this year has been a grant of $920,000 for water main replacement on Randolph Street that the city is seeking to get through Congresswoman Mary Miller and now the city is looking to apply for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to replace water mains along Morning Glory Drive south to Jefferson Street and east along Locust Street and Keefer Drive. Luke Eastin of the South Central Illinois Regional Planning and Development Commission is working with the city on the grant submission and was on hand for a public hearing held Monday night prior to the Vandalia City Council meeting. He says they are working to still gather a few things to help make their case for the grant stronger.
During his brief explanation of the grant, Eastin did reiterate to the council members in attendance that with the proposed project, they do have a plan to try and minimize the chance of any residents in the project area being displaced but they do not foresee any displacement at this time with the current project plans.
