Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray gives his thoughts on both the Flock safety cameras and red light cameras.
Some communities in the state–especially in the northern part of Illinois–have decided to end their contracts with Flock Safety Cameras. These cameras, also knowing as “license plate cameras,” are placed in various spots around the community. Chief Ray says the cameras they have in Vandalia and Fayette County have been an effective tool for crime solving.
Chief Ray says the information on the cameras is only stored for 30 days. And, in order for an officer to look up the information he has to have a case number, in other words there must be a reason for the search. Flock Safety says that missing persons has also been a big area where the cameras have benefitted law enforcement.
As for Red Light Cameras–the cameras that would take a photo and send you a ticket for running a red light or stop sign–Chief Ray says he’s not a fan.
