(Urbana, IL) — A central Illinois lawmaker and her husband are pleading not guilty to federal charges. State Representative Carol Ammons and her husband, Champaign County Clerk Aaron Ammons, were indicted earlier this month on charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Federal prosecutors say the Urbana Democrat devised a scheme to defraud the State of Illinois, its taxpayers and donors and contributors to her campaign from 2017 through June 2025. Allegations include directing state grant money to her daughter, taking kickbacks on bogus campaign expenses and lying to the FBI. The couple entered a not guilty plea yesterday.
