The Vandalia City Council briefly discussed going with a higher bid on a project because of familiarity with the company. But, they eventually decided to go with the low bid.
The project is for a lift station pump replacement and piping rehabilitation at Illini Avenue or the former PolyPak location. The two bids received were for $39,000 from Vandevanter Engineering and for $33,958.71 from C & C Pumps and Supply. Sewer Plant Superintendent Mike Anderson said that Vandevanter has always performed these types of projects for the City in the past. And, while they have worked with C & C on other projects, they had not worked with them on this type of project and he also pointed out the types of pumps they were proposing would be different. After some debate about potentially going with the higher bid because of the comfort level of working with them on similar projects in the past, Alderman Andy Lester said he thought they should go with the low bid and give C & C a shot.
The City Council did approve to move forward with the lower bid from C & C Pumps and Supply, which has locations in Marion and St. Louis.
In other business, the Vandalia City Council approved bids for work on two water towers. The project is to replace mixers in both towers, along with performing a super clorinated cleanout and repairing several holes in each structure on the Thrill Hill and Fillmore Water Towers. The low bid of $38,800 for Thrill Hill and $28,800 for Fillmore from Viking Industrial Painting were approved for the projects.
