A multi-year effort made progress this week in Springfield, which would place new rules on Illinois schools requiring a full-year expulsion of a student who commits an act of sexual assault.
Though the Senate passed the bill, some lawmakers had concerns that the bill is an overreach.
Republican state Sen. Steve McClure began work on a bill after a 10-year-old girl in his district – who was assaulted by a 14-year-old male schoolmate – was initially made to continue attending school alongside the perpetrator.
Before the bill ultimately passed Thursday, senators on the floor grilled McClure for over half an hour.
Democrat Sen. Karina Villa urged the body against passing the bill, arguing the the bill is an overreach of local authority.
The bill was sent to the House after passing with a vote of 48-2. The House will return to session Tuesday.
