Plans to cut red tape and create less restrictive zoning laws statewide has been a major focus for Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker this year.
The governor’s plan, defended by many Democrat state lawmakers, has been put under the microscope in recent days.
The Building Up Illinois Developments initiative would make sweeping changes statewide, aimed at increasing housing supply and speeding up development.
The plan has largely sat on the back burner until this week, when Rep. Kam Buckner defended the housing proposal in a hearing Wednesday.
Brad Cole, executive officer of the Illinois Municipal League, said he and local leaders across the state don’t like the solution.
While the proposal is gaining momentum in Springfield, lawmakers only have until the end of May to come to an agreement on a proposal.
