
Robert L. Bauer, 83, of Altamont, died at 1:00 a.m., Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Effingham.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at St. Clare Catholic Church, Altamont with Rev. Ron Lorilla officiating. Burial will follow at St. Clare Cemetery, Altamont with military rites by Gieseking-Schwerdtfeger V.F.W. Post #7676, Grobengieser-Fischer American Legion Post #512, and Scott Air Force Base Honor Guard. A visitation will be held two hours prior to service time on Tuesday at Gieseking Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to be made to an animal rescue of the donor’s choice or to any other charity of the donor’s choice.
Robert Lee Bauer was born on Saturday, July 25, 1942 to Ralph and Marie (McGraw) Bauer on the family farm, rural Altamont. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Growing up on the farm prepared him for working in various fields and after returning from Texas he assisted his younger brother on the farm. Locally most notably he would be remembered working at Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppe, Altamont and Kenter’s Tavern, Teutopolis. He was an avid reader and was always up for a game of cards or a board game.
He is survived by: his brother, Donald (Lauretta) Bauer of Altamont; sister, Linda (Jim) Garfield of Livermore, Colorado; several nieces and nephews including; Sharon (Roger) Jones of Altamont, Karla (Jeff) Gentry of Effingham, Billy (Algie Dabney) Bauer of Centralia, Susie (Chuck) Wagoner of Neoga, Dr. Linda (Bret) Fuller of St. Peter, MN, David (Katie) Bauer of Altamont; Patrick Bauer of Bridgeton, MO; Kelly (Christine) Garfield of Denver, CO and many great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by; his parents and his beloved Fluffy-Puppy.
