(Chicago, IL) — Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is launching a statewide initiative to address the dangers of high-speed e-bikes and scooters. Giannoulias says e-bike injuries surged by nearly 300-percent nationwide from 2019 to 2022.
The campaign combines public education, updated driver training and a push for modernized road safety laws. A Mount Prospect teen was killed last fall when the e-bike he was riding collided with a pickup truck, while an Illinois State University official died in 2022 after he was hit by an e-bike rider in Bloomington-Normal.
