The Vandalia Fire Department battled multiple fires over the past few days while also having to battle weather conditions such as sub-zero temperatures.
Vandalia Fire Chief Zac Stombaugh says that on January 24th they were paged out at 4:15 am for a report of a fire on the back porch of a residence in the 1000 block of North Carlyle Road. Chief Stombaugh says crews arrived to find fire conditions on the back porch that has spread into the kitchen, basement, and a bedroom on the second floor of the residence. Crews initially started off with an interior offensive attack on the fire but were forced in an exterior defensive position as the fire spread rapidly into the second floor of the log home and interior conditions deteriorated. Chief Stombaugh says that all occupants were able to escape the blaze with no injuries reported. He adds the cause of the fire is undetermined but believed to be electrical in nature. Chief Stombaugh says the Vandalia Fire Department had 14 firefighters on the scene for about 6 hours, fighting the frigid temperatures and water supply limitations. They were assisted by Mulberry Grove, Greenville, Keyesport, St. Peter, Patoka, Brownstown and Smithboro Fire Departments along with Rural Med EMS, Southwestern Electric, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the Red Cross and Jon Cripe with Cripe Mobile Service. Chief Stombaugh adds the Vandalia Fire Department would like to extend a special Thank You to those who helped with supplying food and drinks for firefighters during the incident, including McDonald’s of Vandalia for donating coffee.
Chief Stombaugh says they were also paged out to a fire on Monday at 4:01 am for a report of a chimney fire at a residence in the 1000 block of N. 1100 St in Shobonier. He says crews arrived to find the fire had spread to the attic area of the structure. Chief Stombaugh says the fire was brought under control quickly. He says they had 6 firefighters on the scene for about 3 hours again battling subzero temperatures.
