We hear more today about Data Centers as the City of Vandalia Economic Development Commission heard a presentation on Wednesday of this week and now the City of Vandalia will need to weigh the pros and cons of potentially having one here.
The presentation was given by Michael Carter of BBT. He was asked by I70 Media about some negatives to the community if there was a Data Center located here. He said one of the negative aspects they found in some places–namely in Troy–is having an industrial feel.
Carter said at one time a lot of water would be needed to cool the equipment. But, he says that isn’t necessarily the case any longer.
The biggest concerns most have is the impact on the electrical power grid. Bobby Williams of Southwestern Electric Cooperative was asked by Mayor Doug Knebel if there is a Data Center operating here does it lead to the power rates going up for others.
Speaking on our podcast “Talking about Vandalia,” Mayor Knebel says he knows the concerns about the power grid is something they will have to look at carefully.
Carter did add that good pre-planning for the project would help to avoid pressures on the grid and some of the other negative impacts.
