One of nearly 300 new laws that took effect in Illinois January 1 is a ban on the sale and distribution of compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed House Bill 2363 in August 2024, backed by the Public Interest Research Group.
PIRG reported that three out of four fluorescent lamps are improperly disposed of, allowing mercury to be released into the environment.
State Rep. Nicole La Ha voted in favor of the bill but said lawmakers should focus on smart, affordable solutions.
When “An Inconvenient Truth” documentary was released in 2006, former Vice President Al Gore encouraged Americans to replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents.
