At Monday’s Vandalia City Council meeting, the City Council unanimously accepted the donation of the former Kroger building. Although it set vacant since Kroger closed in 2005, the building has been one that has been quite a hot topic over the past few years–with one group looking to place storage facilities in the building in 2024 and the owner of the building having a similar possibility earlier this year. The City Council has been very divided on the issue and failed to approved such a zoning measure change in either case. Part of the City Council still believes the area is one that has bigger possibilities when it comes to a potential retail establishment.
Speaking this week on our podcast “Talking about Vandalia,” Mayor Doug Knebel says they do have a strong possibility for the building. But, even if they don’t, they will work to market it aggressively to fill the space.
