Vandalia boys basketball got off to a quick start, but then had to push through a couple rough stretches mid-game to grab a 60-50 win over North Mac as South Central Conference play opened up on Friday night. The Vandals started fast with a 20-12 first quarter run that was highlighted by nine points from Qwentyn Stombaugh, five from Andrew Casey and two dunks from Lucas Bowers. That fast start quickly fizzled out in the second quarter though as the script flipped and it was North Mac who went on a 20-8 run in the quarter and Vandalia found itself trailing 32-28 at halftime. The Vandals made some adjustments early in the second half and forced a few turnovers by the Panthers early as they outscored North Mac 14-5 in the third quarter to put themselves back on top by five points, 42-37, as the game shifted to the fourth quarter. The Vandals carried their momentum into the last quarter and closed out the game with an 18-13 scoring advantage in the quarter as they finished off the 60-50 win. The Vandals have now won three in a row, all at home, as they moved to 4-2 on the season and start conference play at 1-0. They will play the final game of their four game homestand tonight as they are set to host Carlyle.
