(Springfield, IL) — Lawyers for former Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson are seeking a new trial. Grayson was convicted in October of second-degree murder in the death of Sonya Massey. Authorities say he shot and killed the unarmed Black woman in July 2024 after she called 9-1-1 over a potential intruder at her Springfield home. Grayson’s attorney filed a motion for a new trial last week with the Sangamon County Circuit Clerk’s Office. His sentencing is scheduled for January 29th.
