The final package to reform Illinois mass transit oversight and generate more taxpayer revenue for operations came together in the early morning hours of Halloween.
Senate Bill 2111 was modified to drop a slew of tax increase proposals lake an amusement tax, a large event tax and a so-called billionaires tax. The updated measure allows for the Regional Transit Authority to increase sales taxes. Sean Scott with the Laborer’s International Union-Midwest Region, said they oppose the measure for dipping into the the road fund.
Supporters of the legislation said it’s time to “fix it and fund it.” The legislation advanced before legislators adjourned for the year. State Senator Ryan Spain said the veto session was bad for taxpayers.
The bill was passed around 3 am on Friday morning.
