A couple of Vandalia Aldermen would like to see a monument honoring a long-ago area War Hero moved off of Vandalia Correctional Center property and to somewhere in town.
During last week’s Vandalia City Council meeting, Alderman Bob Bowen says he and Alderman Russ Stunkel have discussed the possibility of finding a way to move the monument that is on VCC grounds to honor Tom Higgins. Bowen says Higgins was a volunteer during the War of 1812 and died in 1839 from a battle wound. He says the monument was erected in 1984. But, he would like to see it moved somewhere to where people could see it and appreciate Mr. Higgins’ accomplishments.
Bowen says he would like to see if the City of Vandalia could get whoever for the state erected the monument to allow them to move it to a much more prominent place in town.
