Talk about potentially needing to add one or two stop signs in downtown and also the lighting downtown were discussed in detail at Monday’s Vandalia City Council meeting.
During Monday’s meeting, downtown business owner Shane Bowen spoke to the City Council about his concerns with speeding downtown and the safety for pedestrians shopping downtown. He was requesting the city look at potentially adding two stop signs on Gallatin Street.
Bowen later stated that Gallatin & 6th would be his top priority if there was only one added. He also added there a lot of semis, trucks pulling trailers that come down the hill on Gallatin Street and they get their speed up. Bowen added that if you want to encourage more businesses downtown it has to be safe for the shoppers. Mayor Doug Knebel did add there is another issue with pulling off of 4th Street and onto Gallatin Street.
It was also brought up about the downtown lighting and not feeling the lighting downtown is as bright as it should be. During his report, Engineer Lee Beckman said a few years back they added some different lights on 4th Street to see if that lighting would be adequate to potentially replace the lights along Gallatin Street to try and make the downtown area brighter. Alderman Bret Brosman says he believes he knows a potential solution to the problem.
Beckman did add before anything could be changed on Gallatin Street they would need to do a lighting study and then they would have to submit to the Illinois Department of Transportation for approval. Both the traffic matter and the lighting matter will now be discussed further by the City’s Streets Committee.
