The overall long term plan for the City of Vandalia would be to get the Kaskaskia River intake back up and going and have the river as a secondary water source. But, Mayor Doug Knebel says that is probably going to be a bit of a longer term plan.
Speaking on our weekly podcast, “Talking about Vandalia,” Mayor Knebel says the original plan was to have the repair of the water intake at the Kaskaskia River as part of the new Water Treatment Plant. But, he says costs for the project came in higher than expected.
There was some concern that some of the funding sources for the Water Treatment Plant might be going away, so the decision was made to move forward with the 26 million dollar project without the river intake repairs as part of the project. And, Mayor Knebel says the estimated costs for getting the River Intake up and going and a new line to the new treatment makes this a long term plan.
At this time, the river intake is not working and has not worked properly for quite some time. Work is underway on the new Water Treatment Plant for the City of Vandalia.
