An Illinois lawmaker says another heartbreaking tragedy has once again exposed the failures of Illinois’ SAFE-T Act and its time to take action. State Representative Patrick Sheehan points to a case where a Homer Glen couple is charged with the murder of their 2 year old girl who died of a drug overdose. As a result of the SAFE-T Act, the couple escaped jail time.
Sheehan, who is a police officers, says law enforcement is handcuffed and Illinois courts are powerless while criminals walk free.
Critics of the SAFE-T Act says the law sets multiple standards for pretrial detention making it difficult for prosecutors when petitioning to detain defendants that could pose a danger to the public.
