Police supporters have applauded moves by the U.S. Department of Justice to end consent decrees on several police departments.
The Fraternal Order of Police opposed the court-enforceable agreements between municipalities and the federal government.
Retired Riverside, Illinois police chief Thomas Weitzel said ending the decrees was a good move by the Trump administration.
Weitzel said consent decrees are costly to taxpayers in Illinois and around the country.
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and the ACLU of Illinois remain staunch advocates for the consent decree in Chicago.
