Altamont senior hurdler Hayden Summers is a first time state medalist, taking sixth in the 300m Hurdles at the IHSA 1A State Track Finals on Saturday. After winning his preliminary heat on Thursday with a personal record time of 40.62 seconds, Summers shaved even more time off as he ran a time of 40.24 seconds in the Finals. That personal record time came despite some bad luck in the race after an opponent’s hurdle in the adjacent lane caused his hurdle to move with Summers then clipping his own hurdle as it moved. Summers recovered and was able to stay ahead of three other competitors to pull off the career best time and sixth place finish. He is just the second medalist from Altamont in the event joining Ethan Wolff, a two-time medalist in the 300 hurdles in 2006 and 2007 and is the 16th state medalist in program history.
