The Vandalia City Council discussed their new fiscal year budget and the potential loss of the 1% Grocery Sales Tax.
At Monday’s Vandalia City Council meeting, Mayor Rick Gottman told the City Council they will have the budget to approve at the next meeting on April 15th. Alderman Andy Lester asked if the loss of the 1% Grocery Sales tax is still on the table. Mayor Gottman says it is and will likely be voted on by the General Assembly this spring to eliminate the grocery tax, which would cost the City of Vandalia about $175,000 a year in tax revenue. But, Alderman Bob Bowen asked if there was going to be the possibility they could bring it back themselves. Mayor Gottman says that may be the case.
The elimination of the 1% Grocery Sales Tax was part of Governor Pritzker’s budget proposal for this upcoming fiscal year.
