A statewide teacher shortage appears to be improving. A survey of more than 750 school districts by the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools shows a large majority of schools report teacher shortages, but the number drops to as little as 20 percent of schools in some more affluent counties. Executive director Gary Tipsord says it will take more than a single entity to solve the problem.
A number of school leaders report that teacher shortages have eased following changes by the Illinois State Board of Education, including increasing the number of days retired educators and substitute teachers can be in the classroom.
