It is the first day of winter.
You will often hear people say that it’s the “shortest day of the year” but being all days are 24 hours what it really means is the day with the shortest amount of daylight for the year. Today the sunrise is 7:11 am and sunset is 4:37 pm–giving us 9 hours and 26 minutes of daylight for today. After today, we will increase the amount of daylight each day until the first day of summer, which is June 20th of 2024. On that day we will have just shy of 15 hours of daylight.
